As a holistic nutritionist, Nadya had tried many of the different supplements on the market that promised to manage her stress and anxiety, but she was continuously left disappointed.. Following some experimentation, the one supplement that she found to be the most effective for her was somewhat of a surprise and something that she was at first quite resistant to: CBD oil. Now she is the owner and founder of ICARIA, a CBD oil  brand for women, where she encourages women to remember that they are a priority and to put themselves first. We sat down with Nadya to discuss all there is to know about CBD oil including how it works, who can benefit from it, how to use it in our daily lives. 


CBD, or cannabidiol, is a non-psychoactive compound found in the cannabis plant. Unlike the familiar THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol which is also a main active ingredient in cannabis, CBD will not get you high. I repeat, CBD will not get you high or into any kind of altered reality or unwanted mental state. This is great because it offers so many medicinal properties that we can take advantage of without getting into an unwanted frame of mind.
There is currently such a stigma in our society around cannabis products, arguably even more so now with the legalization of cannabis in Canada. However, CBD oil still falls under a grey area and can be difficult for people to obtain from a trusted source. This is really a shame because it offers so many wonderful health benefits, possibly even more so than the high THC cannabis that is so widely available on the market today.


We have an endocannabinoid system within our own body that is responsible for regulating things like sleep, mood, appetite, energy, etc. To keep things simple, CBD binds to the CB1 and CB2 receptors which are located throughout the entire body, including the brain and gut, which is why it can affect things like digestion, inflammation, and cognition which are seemingly unrelated. The receptors act like locks that can only be opened when CBD binds to them. The endocannabinoid system influences pretty much every function within the body. CBD also helps to bring our system back into balance, or homeostasis, when things get a little too hectic, making it a great option for managing stress too.


CBD is becoming increasingly more popular on the market due to the wide spectrum of health benefits that it can offer to those suffering from a number of different health conditions. In addition, it has made quite the entrance because it actually works, and very quickly too. With most supplements, it can take weeks before you start to feel any kind of improvement. CBD however starts working the moment you take it. Among a few of the benefits are stress reduction, better sleep, weight loss, appetite control, less anxiety, and pain relief to name just a few. The other great news is that it helps with these things without any unpleasant or dangerous side effects unlike many of the pharmaceutical drugs out there.


If you are just starting out with CBD oil, then you can rest easy. CBD is extremely safe to take with little to no side effects reported. The worst thing that can happen if you take a slightly higher dose than normal is that you will just feel a bit more relaxed, which does not sound so bad to us! Nadya suggests starting off with 5-10 drops and repeating this every 20 minutes until the desired effect is achieved. There could be somewhat of an adjustment period before you find the dosage that works best for you, so be patient with yourself. The best way to take CBD oil is by placing the selected dose under your tongue to be absorbed by the blood vessels for the fastest results.


This is a very common question and the answer very much depends on you and your experience of it since it will be slightly different for everyone. CBD works to rebalance the body, so if you need rest then it might just make you sleepy and vice versa. You can compare taking CBD oil to drinking a cup of coffee. With both of these, you can tell when they have kicked in but you do not feel anything else other than that. You simply know when they are working. However, while coffee is a stimulant, CBD has quite the opposite effect. With CBD oil, you should begin to feel calm, relaxed, grounded, and focused.
