Bone broth protein powder explained

If you’re a regular in the health food aisle, you may have noticed that a lot of brands are now carrying bone broth protein powder. While we’re fans of food in its whole form whenever possible (e.g. homemade bone broth over a powder), sometimes in order to conveniently add a little protein to our diets when we’re short on time and resources, supplements and powders can be very effective. While smoothies are usually the best vehicle for protein powder, you may be thinking that bone broth in a berry smoothie might taste a little odd. Bone broth is traditionally made by boiling bones over a prolonged period of time to create a nutrient-dense, protein and collagen-rich liquid. The powdered form that many companies are now offering, has been made by dehydrating conventional liquid bone broth to create a concentrated source of protein and nutrients that’s easy to digest.


It is an easily absorbable source of minerals like calcium and magnesium, amino acids (the building blocks of protein) like l-glutamine (supports healthy digestive function), glycine (helps support detoxification) and proline (supports healthy connective tissue). In particular, the gelatin and amino acids found in bone broth have been found to help repair the intestinal lining and reduce inflammation, which is often a result of food sensitivities and other gut-related irritation and disease. Additionally, the collagen and chondroitin found in bone broth are two of the main building blocks for constructing cartilage (which is helpful for joint health). And by now we all know that collagen can improve the health of our nails, hair and skin, if taken on a regular basis.


While bone broth protein powder can be added to smoothies, we prefer adding it to hot and savoury dishes like soups and sauces. I personally like adding it into to dishes that might otherwise be missing protein, like a vegetable soup or stew. I’ve recently started combining it with a tablespoon of miso paste (Genmai Miso specifically), for a protein-rich, gut friendly afternoon snack (great for getting rid of sugar cravings). When sourcing bone broth protein powder, always read the ingredients carefully and make sure that it’s free of antibiotics and added hormones.
